The doctor chuckled, his laugh the quiet but hearty laugh of a fair-sized man, the sound itself relaxing enough to put someone at ease.
"You obviously don't know John very well," he said. "If I don't take it out of his account, I'll never hear the end of it. He's terribly stubborn, and he apparently thinks it was his fault. Don't worry about it."
He placed the syringe on the sanitized countertop and washed his hands at the sink before pulling on a pair of gloves and sitting down on the stool in front of her. She wasn't in any pain, so there was no harm in talking for a couple of minutes; in fact, it was safer to get more information before giving her an injection. Ideally, he would have medical records, but with an underground clinic, one got used to working in the dark. He knew all of the questions that needed to be answered in order to be safe. There wasn't a more experienced doctor anywhere in the world, literally. He'd been practicing for over nine hundred years.
"All I really need to know is if you're allergic to eggs or milk," he said. "I created this kind of painkiller for people with regenerative powers, so I'm confident that it will work, even with how fast your body metabolizes. If you don't want the injection, you don't have to have it, but it'll feel pretty nasty when I put the joint in place."
His regenerative abilities prevented him from aging, and very few people actually knew how old he was, especially since he also changed his appearance every once in a while to stay under the radar. Only the vague sense that he was much older than he looked gave him away, since he had the air of an old man when he looked like he was in his mid-thirties. All of those years of experienced, in combination with his natural abilities, made him extremely good at his job.
