This plane where the freshly dead first arrived was pure white, as if it was made of light, the realm having no true beginning or end, infinite, as all things after life turned out to be. It was where the decision had to be made, to try to go back to the human world as little more than a specter, or to continue on, to go to heaven or hell. It was here where Violet had gotten permission to stay, and to greet the man to whom she’d devoted her life, her love, and her legacy in the form of the beautiful little girl he had raised in her stead. It was nowhere, but like all places, it was ruled by Adoni, and he had allowed her to come and welcome back one of his greatest warriors.
Most of the dead watched the remnants of their old life at first, watching their loved ones pick up the pieces and try to survive in the world without them. After a while, though they never lost interest and in some ways, never would, some lost the heart to keep watching as the world kept turning, until the last traces of their lives on earth were lost to the sands of time and everyone had moved on. They could hardly bear to watch as their children, their partners, their spouses continued on with their lives, short as they were destined to be.
But never Violet.
She’d watched over them, just as she’d promised. Every day since she had passed over, she had kept watch, seeing as her daughter grew from toddler to young woman, from helpless child to capable and strong young hero. She had watched as Will became the hero that the world deserved, and arguably more importantly, the loving father that Iris needed. She’d watched and she had waited for this day to come. He was reckless as ever, and that was something that never could or would change, but his actions had confirmed what Death had said of him, that he would be honored with the greatest of heroes, both on earth and in Heaven, where they were ultimately headed.
This was the day that eternity truly began for them both, not the end. Today was the end of the vigil of waiting for him, and although it had been over fifteen years, it had seemed like no time at all to Violet, dwelling as she did in a place without time, beyond the reach of the decay of age.
“Violet… My love…”
”I’m here, Will…” her voice answered, soft as a whisper as his spirit and soul found its way out of the mortal realm, finally back to where she stood.
In this place, one’s appearance wasn’t dictated by their physical age, or by the wear of time or battle. They appeared as they had in their prime, rid of the scars that they had worn in life, and the burdens that had tied them to their past. Violet’s smile was proud, but tender as she looked at him, standing before her at long last.
“Are you ready?” she asked softly.
